Flooring for dogs: is SPC a good choice?

Updated October 2026 · Enoch Surfaces, Singapore
Short answer

SPC is a practical floor for most dog owners. Its stone-plastic core does not swell if an accident is wiped up, and a clear wear layer protects the wood print from everyday claws. No floor is scratch-proof, though. Enoch planks have a 0.3 mm wear layer, the standard thickness for homes; a manufacturer guide suggests a thicker wear layer for large dogs or several pets.

Wear layer: the part that takes the claws

The wear layer is the clear top film that protects the printed wood look. Enoch's planks have a 0.3 mm wear layer. A manufacturer's guide to SPC wear layers calls 0.25 – 0.3 mm the standard residential choice, and suggests moving up one wear-layer level for large dogs or several pets. For one small or medium dog in a typical home, 0.3 mm is usually enough. For several large, active dogs, ask about a thicker wear layer, or expect fine marks over time.

Seven habits that keep the floor looking new

Keep claws trimmedShort claws mark any floor far less.
Mat the water bowlA rubber-backed mat stops daily splashes reaching the joints.
Wipe accidents quicklyThe core will not swell, but liquid left sitting can seep between planks.
Use a door mat and runnersGrit carried in on paws is what scratches; a mat catches it. Runners also give older dogs grip on a smooth floor.
Pick a mid-tone, textured finishFine marks show less on textured oak looks than on dark, glossy floors.
Add foam if claw noise bothers youThe 6.5 mm build has 2 mm IXPE foam bonded underneath, or lay 5 mm planks on a separate foam underlay.
Keep a spare boxIf one plank is badly damaged, it can be swapped by unclicking planks back from the nearest wall.

Is the underlay safe for pets?

Enoch's IXPE foam underlay is described on its product page as non-toxic and suitable for households with children and pets.

Questions

Is SPC flooring good for dogs?

For most homes, yes. The core does not swell if accidents are wiped up, and the wear layer protects the print from everyday claws. Large or several active dogs can still leave fine marks on any floor.

Can dogs scratch SPC flooring?

Light scratches are resisted by the clear wear layer, but no floor is scratch-proof. Trimmed claws, a door mat for grit, and a textured mid-tone finish keep marks to a minimum.

Is SPC flooring water-resistant against pet urine?

The core does not swell when wet, unlike laminate. Wipe accidents up quickly so liquid does not sit in the joints between planks.

Is SPC slippery for dogs?

SPC has a smooth surface. Runners and rugs on main walkways give older dogs and puppies more grip.

What wear layer do Enoch planks have?

All Enoch SPC planks have a 0.3 mm wear layer, the standard thickness for homes.
