Can SPC Flooring Be Installed Over Existing Tiles?

SPC flooring may be installed over existing tiles when the surface is stable, flat, clean and suitable. Hollow tiles, loose tiles, moisture, slope, unevenness and height issues must be checked first.

Why it matters

Overlay can save disruption, but it is not a shortcut for every floor. The condition below the plank still affects the final result.

Overlay needs a stable base

A rigid click-lock floor needs support below it. If the old tiles move, dip or hide moisture, the new surface can show sound, movement or joint stress.

Loose tiles can create movement below the SPC.

Uneven tile edges can stress the plank.

Moisture-prone areas need more review.

Height changes should be planned

Overlay adds height to the floor. Doors, cabinets, skirting and transition strips should be checked before the quote is treated as final.

Door trimming may become part of the discussion.

Transitions to other rooms should be visible.

Photos help identify the first practical risks.
